Ghaziabad Bakrid Murder Case: Tension Persists in Khoda Despite Arrests, Encounter and Police Crackdown

Nearly a week after 17-year-old Surya Pratap Chauhan was murdered in Ghaziabad’s Khoda area, an uneasy calm prevails across the locality. While police have arrested multiple accused and eliminated the alleged main accused in an encounter, residents say the shock and anger surrounding the incident continue to linger.

The killing, which took place on May 28, quickly escalated into one of the most closely followed criminal cases in Uttar Pradesh, triggering protests, political reactions and a massive law enforcement response.

According to police, Surya was attacked in Navneet Vihar around 3:30 pm following an alleged dispute involving a motorcycle. Family members have alleged that he was lured to the spot through a phone call before being surrounded and repeatedly stabbed by Asad and his associates. Critically injured, Surya was rushed to a hospital in Noida, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The incident sparked outrage across the region, with residents demanding swift and strict action against those responsible. Police launched an extensive manhunt, arresting several suspects while the alleged main accused, Asad, remained on the run. Authorities also announced a reward of Rs 50,000 for information leading to his arrest.

The case took a dramatic turn on the night of May 30-31 when a joint team of Khoda and Indirapuram police tracked Asad based on intelligence inputs. Police claimed that during the operation, Asad opened fire while attempting to evade arrest, leading to retaliatory action in which he was fatally injured. A police officer was also hurt during the exchange.

Investigators have since arrested Nawab, Farhan and Atif for their alleged involvement in the murder conspiracy and attack. Another accused, Sarik Mewati, remains absconding, and search operations are continuing.

Political Visits, Support for Family

The high-profile nature of the case has drawn visits from several political leaders and public representatives. Former BJP MLA Sangeet Som extended financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh to the family, while BJP MLA Nandkishore Gurjar and Cabinet Minister Sunil Kumar Sharma assured them of justice.

Former MLA Amarpal Sharma announced that a road or public intersection in Khoda would be named after Surya Chauhan. He also promised employment support for Surya’s elder brother.

Recently, the family immersed Surya’s ashes in the Ganga at Haridwar. While acknowledging the support received, family members maintain that complete justice will only be achieved when all accused are brought to book.

Administrative Action Intensifies

Following the encounter, authorities initiated proceedings against a property linked to the family of the main accused, citing alleged illegal construction and encroachment.

At the same time, officials launched a three-day special operation, dubbed “Operation Clean Sweep”, across Khoda. Senior officers, including District Magistrate Ravindra Kumar Mandar and DCP Dhaval Jaiswal, personally monitored the drive, which involved drone surveillance, sniffer dogs and extensive search operations.

Heavy Security, Lingering Anxiety

Despite the police action, security remains tight in Navneet Vihar and surrounding areas. Additional police personnel continue to be deployed, drone monitoring remains active, and regular patrols are being conducted to maintain order.

Local markets have witnessed reduced footfall amid heightened security and the continued presence of media teams, social organisations and visitors. Residents say that while fears of immediate unrest have eased, the emotional impact of the teenager’s killing remains deeply felt.

With investigations still underway and one accused yet to be arrested, the focus now remains on whether the legal process will deliver justice in what has become one of Uttar Pradesh’s most talked-about murder cases this year.
