Special Escort Highlights Strong India-UAE Strategic Ties
Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a special aerial escort from UAE Air Force F-16 fighter jets as his aircraft entered the country’s airspace on Friday, underlining the growing strategic and diplomatic partnership between India and the United Arab Emirates.
The gesture took place during PM Modi’s brief visit to Abu Dhabi, which marked the first stop of his five-nation foreign tour. As Air India One approached the UAE, two F-16 Block 60 “Desert Falcon” fighter jets accompanied the aircraft before it landed in the capital.
At Abu Dhabi airport, PM Modi was welcomed with ceremonial honours before holding bilateral talks with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, widely known as MBZ.
Symbol of Deep Strategic Partnership
The fighter jet escort was seen as a symbolic display of trust and close cooperation between the two nations.
BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya described the gesture as a reflection of the “deep strategic partnership, trust and personal warmth” shared between the leadership of India and the UAE.
The BJP also stated that the honour highlighted the increasing global stature of India and the strengthening relationship between New Delhi and Abu Dhabi.
Visit Comes Amid Rising Tensions in West Asia
PM Modi’s visit to the UAE came at a time when tensions remain high in West Asia due to the ongoing regional conflict involving Iran.
According to reports, the UAE has faced thousands of drones and missiles during the conflict, many of which were intercepted by its defence systems. The same F-16 “Desert Falcon” fighter jets used to escort PM Modi’s aircraft were reportedly involved in air defence operations during recent regional tensions.
During the meeting with MBZ, PM Modi thanked the UAE leadership for the warm welcome and the special fighter jet escort.
Calling the UAE his “second home,” the Prime Minister said the gesture was an honour for the people of India. He also expressed support for the UAE amid regional security challenges and said India stands firmly with the Gulf nation.
Energy Security and Strategic Agreements Take Centre Stage
Energy cooperation emerged as one of the key focus areas during the talks between the two leaders.
The ongoing tensions around the Strait of Hormuz have raised concerns over disruptions in global oil, LNG and LPG supplies. India, which imports nearly 85 per cent of its crude oil requirements, has been closely monitoring the situation.
Despite the short duration of the visit, India secured several important agreements from the UAE, including a long-term LPG supply arrangement aimed at addressing domestic fuel shortages.
The two countries also signed agreements related to strategic petroleum reserves, defence cooperation and the development of a ship repair cluster at Vadinar in Gujarat.
UAE Announces Major Investments in India
Apart from defence and energy cooperation, the UAE also announced investments worth USD 5 billion in Indian infrastructure projects.
Officials said the agreements demonstrated how India-UAE relations are rapidly expanding beyond traditional trade and energy partnerships into strategic sectors such as defence, logistics, finance and infrastructure.
Growing Importance of India-UAE Relations
PM Modi’s latest visit comes just months after UAE President MBZ made a short standalone visit to India earlier this year, signalling the increasing importance both countries place on bilateral ties.
The evolving geopolitical dynamics in West Asia, including changing relations among Gulf nations, have further added significance to India’s engagement with the UAE.
After concluding his UAE visit, PM Modi is scheduled to travel to the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Italy as part of his multi-nation diplomatic tour.
